The Becton / Brand identity + digital experience
A movement needed a mark with somewhere to go.
The Becton is an International Black Theatre & Arts Consortium rooted in Niagara Falls, New York. Wild Monkey translated a wide-ranging vision for representation, revitalization, redevelopment, arts, entertainment, and education into a brand system built to move from stage to street to screen.
The assignment
A brand system for a bigger stage.
The organization already had a point of view: art as a force for cultural expression, community connection, and change. The design challenge was to turn that ambition into something recognizable enough to hold a theatre consortium, education, community initiatives, programming, partnerships, merchandise, and a public digital presence without shrinking the idea to a single venue or event.
01 / Identity
Make the name carry the story.
The identity moved away from a place-picture logo toward a concentrated Becton wordmark and family of marks. The presentation defines the goal as simple but immersive: a mark that identifies first, then rewards closer reading through the letterforms and their symbolic construction.
The result is deliberately tall, compressed, and theatrical — something that can stand alone, become a window for imagery, or scale into environmental graphics without losing its silhouette.
02 / Applications
The identity had to travel.
A cultural institution does not live in a brand guide. We pressure-tested the system across outdoor media, apparel, environmental applications, and campaign surfaces so the same voice could move between institutional credibility and cultural energy.
The brand overview centers a mostly black-and-neutral palette with a restrained blue signal and a direct verbal system. The recurring invitation — “step in.” — turns the identity from a badge into a call to participate.

04 / Digital expression
Put the identity in motion.
The website extends the identity into an active public experience: mission, programming, sponsors, events, commerce, and The Becton’s continuing story. The same compressed mark, dark field, image-led storytelling, and “step in.” language provide continuity between the physical applications and the live digital brand.
